The home stretch?

Where we are now: in the home stretch…well sort of!

Over 90% of our home study paperwork has been completed and submitted and we have had 2 successful in-home visits from our social worker.  We have one more to go because the state mandates that it needs to be 3 face-to-face visits.  Our wonderful (and very supportive) social worker said we could have completed it all in just 2 visits…since my husband & I are talkers (go figure!)…but the state mandates that we have to have 3.  So the third and final visit will be a nice chat over coffee at a local coffee shop!

While this seems like a huge step…we realize that we have really just dipped a toe in the gigantic pool that is the adoption process.  As we have stated before…the home study is just the first step.  Once we are “approved”…meaning we, our home and literally everything in our background has been deemed acceptable to raise a potential child…we start to self-promote and continue to call on you fine folks to keep us in mind if you hear of someone thinking of adoption.

However, through our short journey down this road, both Travis & I have reflected back on how we chose this path and what/who led us to it.  So many people urged us to adopt, saying…”why don’t you just adopt?  As if it was an easier alternative.  Heck, we even said it ourselves a few times!  We said “once we have exhausted everything we can handle with fertility treatments – we will adopt”…as if to imply…we’ll be done with the hard stuff.  We had no idea, and really, why should we?  We didn’t really know anyone who had adopted or had been adopted…or so we thought…

Disclaimer: I thought I would take this time to enlighten our readers on some of the myths/thoughts about what we have experienced thus far in this process.  If this doesn’t interest you…feel free to stop reading now…absolutely no hard feelings.  However, if you want to know a little more about the process either because you, yourself were curious or want to be understanding or supportive of someone you know going through the process…read on, my friend.

First off, I would like to clarify…I am totally NOT complaining….I am astonished at what the process entails.  I am astonished, and quite frankly A-M-A-Z-E-D at the hoops and boundaries jumped & crossed by adoptive parents-to-be.  If you want a true testament of a loving parent…look into the face of someone that has adopted….and then look at that child…that child is loved beyond belief…many times because they had multiple people love and care enough for them to give them the best possible life imaginable.

Although the paperwork process is grueling and intense…no stone left unturned and no skeletons in the closet...I can see the purpose in it.  For instance, we have had to explore our thoughts and beliefs of things (like parenting techniques) that maybe we wouldn’t have done prior to having a child the conventional way.  So many things & plans are in place now because of this process that I KNOW would not have been done otherwise.  Things like: a well thought out & written fire emergency plan that includes a working fire extinguisher and a fire ladder from the 2nd floor story window to the ground, evacuation plans (that includes a “go” bag) and where we would go in the event of a community evacuation, selecting doctors for EVERYTHING…and by everything, I mean: pediatrician, mental health doctor, speech therapy doctor, physical therapy doctor, neuro-psychologist, etc.

Travis & I have said numerous times over the past few months that we feel we are finally in the right place.  All the crap (and yes, I mean crap…to refresh, refer to this post) that lead us to this decision had to happen.  The stars have seemed to finally aligned and are leading us down this path.  Over the past few months we have met many people that have adopted and are delighted to share their (very successful) story…which is important while going through this process because unfortunately you really only hear about the unsuccessful ones.  And we cannot keep count of the number of people that after hearing our news, have told us they, themselves are adopted.  From people we've just met to wonderful neighbors we've known for years.  It is truly heartwarming and further strengthens our determination that we are heading in the right direction.

If you made it all the way to the end of this very long post…thank you & congratulate yourself…it was a long-winded one!  But more importantly, thank you for your continued support!  It means more than you will ever know!

XOXO
-Susan & Travis

A small victory!

Two months and 5 days ago (but who's counting?) we received our instructions for beginning our Home Study.  After two months of gathering papers and signing documents, we finally mailed (almost) everything off today.  We still have some educational classes to take, which we will receive a certificate of completion and our FBI background checks to go.  Once our information is reviewed we can get a Social Worker out to our house for interviews and get this Home Study done!  This whole paper chasing and Home Study process is predicted to last approximately 4-6 months.

 And so here we are:

Copy of most 2 recent pay stubs
Copy of Life Insurance Policies
Copy of Automobile Insurance Policies
Copy of Pet records (yes, even Beamer has to reach clearance status!)

So that's what we've been doing for the last two months. My original goal was to do it all at record speed and get it done in 2 weeks. Ha! Then my goal was 3 weeks, then 1 month. And well…here we are!

It feels incredibly good to have all that in the mail.  The last few days…Travis and I turn to each other and give a look like, "I can't believe we finally completed that!"

It. Feels. So. Good.

So good in fact…we are treating ourselves to a little time away…just the two of us!  Yippee!

Our mini vacay will start…ironically…where it all started for Travis & I…A Dave Matthews Concert.  We have always loved DMB and have followed him around to numerous shows over the years…NC, VA, NYC, DC.  8 years ago, Travis almost proposed to me at a Dave show…but he got too excited and couldn’t wait so he popped the question the night before....and the rest is history!

After the show we will head to Cape Hatteras for a few days for some fun in the sun!  Can’t wait!

Thank you to those reading this blog post and following our story.  Please share our story and let anyone & everyone know that we have not given up on our dream to have a family and would love the assistance of our friends & family to help us spread the word, share stories, offer comfort and one day celebrate with us as we bring a little one home.  It has been a long road, but we are confident there is a reason for everything!  Feel free to share our story with others that may be struggling with their own fertility issues and/or those contemplating the toughest decision of their lives...allowing their child to be loved & cared for by an adoptive family.

What a process!

Forgive me for letting so much time lag between blog updates!  We are new to this adoption process and the beginning of it can be a bit overwhelming…to say the least!  First and foremost, I would love to tell everyone it is less stressful and not near as emotionally grueling as fertility treatments…this is totally what Travis & I were expecting.  We were WRONG!  Although we are not physically going through testing...or taking multiple shots to the stomach…or in the dreaded 2 week wait.  We are experiencing something…

It’s hard to describe exactly.  Overwhelming is probably the best word that I can use to describe it.  I realize now, more than ever, that those lucky parents that chose the path to adoption…and completed it…are a very special few.  I didn’t think I went into this process blindly…I had done a little research here and there on the adoption process, but it is a whole different perspective when you are knee deep in it.  I think I was like many that thought…”yeah, I know there is going to be a lot of paperwork and a long process, but so many people have done it, and with everything we have been through over the past 5 years, I’m sure we can handle it.”

Once again, another test of our true longing to be parents is at work!

It’s a slow process and one that patience is quite the virtue.  We are still in the beginning stages…the homestudy is underway…which is only the first step in a multi-step process.

When we received our homestudy paperwork we were super excited to get the process started and ripped the packet open with nervous anticipation.  The more we read through the information the more in-depth we realized we needed to get.  The stack of paperwork was divided into 7 packets…each packet no less than 10-15 pages.  We dove in with determination and plowed through the first few (easy) packets that just required general information and medical history, along with a physical and gathering of financial papers.  Next was the 2-3 page auto-biographical sketch that we had to write about ourselves, our entire family, our courtship & marriage and how we planned to pass along our moral beliefs to our potential children.  Followed by a detailed outline of what our potential family would do in the event of an emergency such as, fire or community evacuation.  (We even had to draw a blueprint of our house with exits that would be used in case of such an emergency).  All of this is followed by multiple in-home visits by a qualified social worker before getting the final “stamp of approval” that we, and our home, is suitable for bringing an infant into our family.

So…our mantra over the next few months…

Overwhelming and tedious??  YES!

Going to be worth it in the long run??  ABSOLUTLEY!!

Please keep your fingers crossed for us over the next few months and we will update soon!

What's with the name?

First & foremost…thank you to all that took the time to read our first blog post a few weeks ago!  The response & support has been humbling to say the least!  We are very excited to begin this journey and to know we have your thoughts & prayers behind us means the world!  One of the many questions that we got when we launched the blog was…”What’s with the name?”  Well, a lot of thought when into that…those that know Susan are shocked, I’m sure!  Not much happens without A LOT of deep thought and pondering!  At any rate, here it goes: as we went through our many years of fertility treatments numerous friends & relatives celebrated their own births of beautiful sons & daughters, nieces & nephews.  As we celebrated with them, we also took solace in online forums for comfort and support from many faceless friends that were dealing with the same struggles we were.  It was in those dark corners that a plethora of supporters stood...that could talk the (infertility) talk and walk the (childless) walk.  One day someone posted a link to a story that just seemed to stick with us.  Maybe it is what helped us plug through all those years…and makes us continue to see the big, bright light at the end of the tunnel.  THIS is why we are patiently waiting for our slice!

(I apologize in advance…this story is a bit long, but good nonetheless)

Imagine yourself dressed up in your finest clothes.  You and your sweet husband are attending a dinner together in one of the nicest restaurants in town.  You both have planned, waited and saved for this evening.  To say the least, you are very excited!  You both arrive and the atmosphere is more than you expected. Everyone around you is having a good time.  The chandeliers are sparkling, candles are glowing and sweet soft music is playing in the background. To your pleasant surprise you see others there you know.  You are seated with them and in your heart you think there just couldn't be anything better!
The table is just exquisite.  Breathtaking really.  The people at your table begin to talk to you in jolly conversation.  You glance at the menu and you don't even know where to begin!  You look over everything slowly and carefully, especially the dessert menu!  All of your life you have been hearing about this restaurant's marvelous and divine desserts.  Deep in your heart, you have been looking forward to enjoying dessert the most!

Everyone at your table orders their food.  For dessert they all order chocolate cake.  You think, "Hey that sounds perfect.  I'll have chocolate cake too please."
The waiter nods in approval and quickly swifts off to put in your order.  In the meantime, you are still enjoying the surroundings, the music and the company.  You grab your husband's hand and sigh "Yes, life just couldn't get any better."
The food comes and everything looks just pleasing.  Some of the things you tasted you really love, some of the things you didn't.  Either way, you know that dessert is on its way.  That thought in and of itself is just exciting!  Then you see him, your waiter!  Your wonderful, blessed waiter with a silver tray full of plates of chocolate cake!  He comes and starts handing out plates to those you know.  You look at the cake and to put it simply, it looks just divine.  You're even more excited now!  The waiter comes to your side and then passes you and your husband.  You are shocked and think there must be some mistake.  You don't know what to do, but rather than make a fuss you think, "Just wait, I will get my chocolate cake soon too."

Those that have their dessert are going on and on about how amazing the taste is.  You smile, you are truly happy for them.  Deep down you are anxious and their feelings only feed your curiosity and desire.  Then you see the waiter again and think, "Ahhh, here he is."  You notice that he starts handing out seconds and thirds to those that have already had their piece of cake.  Your husband doesn't notice, he's busy chatting with the fellow next to him!  Deep down though you get a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach.  You know something is wrong, something is very, very wrong.
You ask the waiter, "Excuse me please. Where is my chocolate cake that I ordered"?  The waiter just replies, "The baker has said that you must wait."  He rushes off and not another word is said.  Time goes on.  You still enjoy the surroundings, the people and the conversations.  All the while though, you can't get chocolate cake out of your mind.  Time keeps creeping by and soon your husband notices too, "Where is our dessert?"  You hold his hand and look into his eyes and think, "Even without chocolate cake, life is still good."
Time, however, creeps and it creeps.  At moments it seems like it has even stopped.  It's getting late and people are noticing you haven't received your dessert yet.  Questions start arising and you just don't know how to respond.  You look around other tables and notice that people are also getting their third, fourth and fifth servings of dessert.
You notice that others have ordered things for dessert besides chocolate cake.  There is cherry pie, brownie ice cream sundaes, raspberry cheesecakes and such.  They seem just as pleased, if not more pleased with their desserts and you wonder, "Should I order cherry pie too"? You talk to the waiter and he simply says, "I'm sorry ma'am, you just need to be patient and wait."
You are starting to burn inside.  Despite all of your best efforts you are beginning to boil. You really want to jump on top of the table and stomp while shouting, "Where is my chocolate cake?"  You don't though because you know that will get you nowhere!  Instead you look around and notice that there are some that are refusing their chocolate cake.  "It will make me fat" one says.  "Ugh. I have enough already" another states.  One woman simply dumps her beautiful chocolate cake onto the floor.
As you look deeper around you, you notice there are a few others that are waiting too. Your heart goes out to them.  You smile and wish there was something more you could do.  You know their pain and it hurts.  It really hurts.
Finally, the waiter comes and he has chocolate cake on that familiar beautiful silver platter...and he has enough for two.  One for your husband and one for you!  You’re so elated with joy that you can hardly stand it!!!  You tell everyone at your table and they are just as happy for you.  "We knew it would happen" they say. "You just needed to relax"!  Little did they know that deep inside relaxing was the last thing you were feeling!  You look at your husband. Tears are in both of your eyes.  You carefully take a taste.  It's such sweet, sweet perfection.  You go to take another and just before you do the waiter comes and gently takes your plates away. "Something is wrong" he says.  "Don't worry my dear, the time is soon."
There's confusion.  Sadness.  Anger.  Above all though, you are just deeply and truly heartbroken.  Heartbroken to the very core.  You don't know what to do.  You turn to others for support.  They cry with you and too ask why.  You take a deep breath and find the strength to go on.  You have been given the promise that you will receive dessert.  It is just not understood as to when.  You decide to put your full trust in the baker.  You reach far inside within yourself and find the effort to ask your husband to dance.
He looks at you and smiles..."Yes, I would love to dance with you!"  You both get up, leave the table and set off to dance.
As you are dancing, you get your bearings.  You again begin to notice your surroundings. The beautiful surroundings that have so magically grabbed your attention in the first place.  You remember the music, the sounds, and the smell of the sweet flowers.  You breathe.  That's all you can do.  You breathe and slowly begin to enjoy the moment again.  Slowly, it all comes back to you.  The things you love.  Being with the person you love the most.  The pains you have just felt are still there.  Still vulnerable, but you feel life again.  Yes, life is still good.

After quite a few dances, you both decide it's time to sit at your table.  People still have their desserts and their chocolate cakes.  Your space is still empty.  You decide, however, to really focus on those around you.  In doing so you find more joy.  The desire for dessert is still there- but it's manageable.  Time moves on.
Then suddenly, out of nowhere, your waiter appears.  He has the biggest smile on his face. He is pleased to announce that you and your husband's dessert is finally here!!  Your heart wells up with joy, but you're afraid too.  You ask the waiter, "Will you take it away"?  "No, this one was made especially for you."
You smile back, hardly believing that this could be true or real.  You look at it and it's not a dessert you have ever seen before.  It's then that you realize that the baker has made a dessert with all of your favorite colors and flavors.  Careful detail was lovingly taken into every consideration.  "How did He know that this is exactly what I wanted"?  The waiter just smiles and says, "Because he knows and loves you."  If you look, you can see him there.  You look and at the door, through the little round window you see a gentle man with tears in his eyes.  He is grinning from ear to ear and looking at you and your husband.  You can hardly see anymore because of all of the happy tears.  You whisper a big "Thank You" and in your heart you feel that this simple phrase will never be enough.

You look at the people around you; they too have tears in their eyes.  They too are smiling from ear to ear.  Everything is so precious and tender now- even more so than when you first arrived here.  It's then that you learn that the pains you have felt all along the way.  The waiting, the crying, the agony.  It's all been a special recipe to make this moment this much more wonderful and sacred.

In your soul you take a deep breath and slowly let out a big sigh of gratitude.

You grab your husband's hand and sigh again, "This is the perfect slice!"

The end & the beginning!

So, anyone that knows us well, knows that we are fairly private people.  Our closest family and friends know of our fertility struggles over the past 5 years, but most do not.  So, why are we doing a blog you might ask?  Well, it is because we are closing a BIG chapter of our lives and redirecting our love & energy in another direction.  We are excited to announce that we are pursuing private domestic adoption!  We are taking to the blog-o-sphere, social media, flyers...you name it...to let anyone & everyone know that we have not given up on our dream to have a family and would love the assistance of our friends & family to help us spread the word, share stories, offer comfort and one day celebrate with us as we bring a little one home.  It has been a long road, but we are confident there is a reason for everything!  Feel free to share our story with others that may be struggling with their own fertility issues and/or those contemplating the toughest decision of their lives...allowing their child to be loved & cared for by an adoptive family.  Below is simply the story of us and how we got to where we are today…patiently waiting to see what lies ahead!

A little over 5 years ago, my husband and I decided to start a family. We approached it...I think like most couples, with nervous excitement and anticipation. We had the name conversations, wondered who our future child would look like, figured out what the due date would be each month that we tried....

In our minds, it was a new beginning. We were ready to leave behind our carefree days and restful nights to start the family both of us have always wanted. We had finally found each other, we were blissfully in love... it was time.

It sounds like such a cliché, but if I only knew then what I would learn about life, about my faith, about my marriage, and myself.

The months of anticipation and excitement soon turned into months filled with angst, and worry, and sheer frustration. Travis and I were never much for fighting, but when the stress of not getting pregnant month after month really hit; it was starting to put a strain on our marriage/relationship/communication...all of the above!

After much discussion, we sought the help of a fertility specialist, and found a renewed sense of hope and once again felt that nervous anticipation and excitement.

Over the course of the next 4 1/2 years, I consumed countless fertility meds, saw the look of sheer terror and sadness on my husband's face as he watched me stick myself with more needles than I can even count at this point. I’ve seen such protective sadness on his face after countless failed procedures. I've seen almost child-like sheer joy on his face when I told him he was going to be a father- only to have that look turn to horror when weeks later, I had to tell him we lost it.

I, myself, have questioned my God and my faith. I've questioned my strength. I've looked in the mirror at my own face and wondered who is this person who looks so tired and worn out and sad? What happened? How did something so joyous, like starting a family, turn into such heartache? Did I even ever know it was possible to cry so many tears?

So, here I sit, over 5 years later... amazed that our love, marriage and both of our sanities have lasted and even gotten stronger as we embark on our adoption process.  These past 5 years have taught me so very much. I've learned I really know who my true friends are...those friends that are 100% there for us and don't shy away from us because they don't know what to say or how to ask.  I've learned what real true love is. Travis and I have such a bond, such a special type of closeness that only such tragedy can forge. I suspect that one day (hopefully soon), We are going to learn a new, very special type of love…the love for a child we will call our own.

I know the days, months, and years ahead will present their own type of new challenges. But I now know how strong we both are-individually and as a unit. And I know for sure, I have a deeper faith than I thought possible.

I am scared as I sit and write this. I pray that all goes well and we have a healthy baby one day soon. I pray that I make it through the many days of waiting & anticipation that I know, lay ahead. I’ll admit I feel a twinge of sadness to know that I will never know the secret language of kicks and pokes that an expecting mother might, or the celebratory excitement of attending my own baby shower. But mostly, I feel amazed that now; there is an end and a beginning. Hopefully an end to the years of waiting and sadness and a new beginning soon, as we start our life as a family of three.

I am not sure of the name of the emotion I will see on Travis's face the day we have our forever baby at home, but I can tell you that I can't wait to see it. Because in that moment, I will know that every needle stick, every tear, every doubt, every crushing blow, every fear, every doctor visit, every moment of longing.... it will all have been worth it as that will be the day, two things I have wanted so very badly will happen:  my beautiful, sweet husband will become a father, and I will finally be a mom.
